Nyetimber Classic Cuvée MV (Magnum) , 2013 Base

Magnums receive a little longer in the Nyetimber cellars, both on lees and post-disgorgement. This is beautifully expressive, with shortbread pastry, raspberry and even a touch of blackberry fruit. The lovely clarity of Pinot fruit reminds me of Northern Montagne de Reims Champagne here, tinged with ginger biscuit richness. Once again, the poise on the palate is where Nyetimber shows its colours; from start to finish there’s nothing popping out from between the stitches here. Whether it’s the base vintage or the magnum speaking there’s just an extra degree of energy and lift here.

Nyetimber Tillington 2013

76% Pinot Noir and 24% Chardonnay from Nyetimber’s Tillington vineyard. I tasted this on release. A year later it has found its feet beautifully, rivalling the 1086 Rosé for the most expressive wine in the portfolio for current drinking. It is quite ‘golden’ in flavour profile, with yellow raspberry, French apple tart and a little salted butter and ginger snap savour, decorated with delicious wisps of floral, exotic honey and apple blossom. In Tillington, 2013 is a vintage to love!

Nyetimber 1086 2009

46% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Noir, 11% Pinot Meunier. I feel as though the selections made for this wine were not about which wines from this excellent harvest shouted loudest; it seems more like an assemblage of the most refined, textured wines in the Nyetimber palate. The wine exudes this brilliant aura of coolness and freshness, with a beautiful sweet touch of creamy oyster shell framing Asian pear, greengage and sweet anise notes. A little gingerbread and floral honey shows some promise of development, whilst there is a real acceleration of ripe energy towards the finish which elevates this cuvée. This is just coming into its own.

Nyetimber 1086 Rosé 2010

75% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay. Again, this feels as if the Rosé MV has been taken to another level of refinement and detail – gone is the friendly poached strawberry in centre stage, replaced with subtle sweet red fruits that leap-frog back and forth with layers of darker cherry and spiced pomegranate flavours. There’s more headiness and immediacy of flavour here than in the blanc, with candied blood orange and flecks of sage and bitters that add rather than detract here. That interior freshness is present, as is the meticulously wrapped acidity and delicious, subtle pasty richness. The blanc may outrun this, but for now this is one of England’s finest.

Nyetimber Classic Cuvée MV , 2014 Base

Classic Cuvée (2014 base) is composed of between 50-60% Chardonnay, 30-40% Pinot Noir and 10-20% Pinot Meunier, with reserve wines forming 25-30% of the blend. There is a crystalline clarity to this wine – a quiet purity that is perhaps easy to overlook. Subtle lemon tart, sweet raspberries and honeysuckle with gentle white peach notes and subtle yellow citrus on the close. A true assemblage, where nothing dominates. This sets the tone for the whole range in not being led by acid; it just plays delightfully with delicate, sweet autolytic notes and deep-running freshness. The 2014-based iteration is such a settled, unflappable wine.

Nyetimber Blanc de Blancs 2013

Blanc de Blancs 2013 is the first vintage of this cuvée to include some fruit from Nyetimber’s Hampshire vineyards on chalk. It is a serene, focused blanc de blancs with classic lemon and pear fruit, fragrant magnolia blossom and a clean, cool airiness to it. It is wearing its lees-ageing very lightly at the moment with subtle bakery tones, but more richness will come from time. Because the acidity is tucked into the texture so carefully (unlike some 2013s), this vintage will stay well-knit over the time it needs to come out of its shell.

Nyetimber Rosé MV

The blend varies for the Rosé MV, but tends to be fairly evenly split between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (with less than 5% Pinot Meunier). Showing trademark Nyetimber delicacy, there’s sweet poached red berries and pomegranate fruit here, touched with little details of sweet basil, clementine and subtle biscuit tones. A little crabapple too, but this is not one of those herbal, hedgerow rosés with youthful acidity and dosage-filled texture – it has the ripeness and time in bottle to offer something a little more layered.

Nyetimber Rosé MV NV, 2014 Base

A restrained style at the moment, opens with sweet cherry giving way to gentle redcurrant shortbread. There’s a little white peach melba (good 2014 Chardonnay fruit in there) and red pear too, touched with macaroon and cream. Very subtle ginger and white pepper spice, with something like Thai basil too – I think some of these aromatics will come into focus soon. The Chardonnay keeps it so defined on the palate, which finds a very deft and transparent dosage balance. It’s good but it’s only just unfurling.
