Greyfriars Blanc de Noirs 2015

60% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier. This is my favourite of the lineup, with lovely stone fruit danish pastries, blackberry jam on rye bread, almond essence and ripe cherries. The fruit is fresh, ripe and outgoing, which is the reason the very low dosage – just 2 g/l – works so well here. Really lovely and top value.

Greyfriars Brut NV

At £18 the Brut NV (60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier) occupies rare territory in the UK. Fresh and green appley, with grassy elderflower, vegetal notes and a lemony finish. At 5 g/l dosage it feels quite serious and dry. Over-pressed or forced. Not clean.

Greyfriars Brut Rosé NV

Brut Rosé NV (100% Pinot Noir) is the pick of the NVs, with nice redcurrant and English cherries, some pretty floral and herbal tones and a slightly savoury, brown bread substance adding some breadth. Hard to knock this for the money. Cleaner than the Blanc.

Greyfriars Classic Cuvée 2014

The Classic Cuvée 2014 (56% Chardonnay, 22% Pinot Noir, 22% Pinot Meunier) is a noticeable step up in depth, with lovely ripe pear, lemon and almond flavours and even some tropical notes. Acidity takes the reins on the pleasingly textured palate. A pointed, brisk finish.

Greyfriars Rosé Reserve 2014

The Sparkling Rosé Reserve 2014 (90% Pinot Noir, 10% Pinot Meunier) is a real character and pick of the Vintage range; 1/3 of the base wine was fermented in oak, and those buttery, slightly vanilla-spiced pastries pop up here to throw an interesting light on some classic ripe strawberry fruit. The oak is quite present in this delicate style, but it does hold together with a fine mousse and a pleasing tartness. I would prefer less evident oak influence.

Greyfriars Oaked Blanc de Blancs 2014

The Oaked Blanc de Blancs 2014 shows meadow flowers and herbs, pithy lemons and butter and spice. A very bright, white character to the fruit here. The oak is nicely-judged, but it doesn’t seem quite as outgoing as many 2014s on this showing

Greyfriars Cuvée Royale 2015

Cuvée Royale 2015* is a selection of 50% each of the estate’s best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, 100% fermented and aged in old oak. Just a lovely golden fruit bowl of apricots, frangipane and dried yellow fruits with touches of elderflower and a buttery, peppery oak richness. There is structure and tightness here, finishing very bright and dry with a broad, silky mousse – a lot going on for £30.
