Chapel Down Kit’s Coty Blanc de Blancs 2014

There’s a beautiful citrus expression here; lemon meringue and ripe zest rounded out with a little caramelised pear and buttery brazil nut richness – there’s 20% barrel-aged wine in the blend. It needs a little more time for the palate to fully integrate and for the dosage to settle.

Chapel Down Kit’s Coty Coeur de Cuvée 2014

The two Kit’s Coty Blanc de Blancs were fairly close in quality in 2013, but in the Kit’s Coty Coeur De Cuvée 2014*, which retails at £100, has found the gear it needed in this vintage with sourdough and spiced butter notes, roasted apples in cream and fragrant blossom. The palate has a lovely sense of togetherness and progression drawing the elements of fruit, acid, oak and lees-ageing together and separating it from the standard Cuvée. Gentle toasted nuts on the finish. An accomplished Blanc de Blancs that will age with interest.

Chapel Down Brut NV, 2016 Base

2016 Base, 18 months on lees. 53% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay, 7% Pinot Blanc, 4% Pinot Meunier. The delicious Kit’s Coty wines grab the headlines, but it is worth highlighting the transformation this wine has undergone over the last few years. This is quite simply in the best place this important and highly-visible cuvée has ever been. Lovely yellow grapefruit and toast with bright, ripe apple and subtle white fruit sweetness riding a gentle biscuit richness and a little herbal twist; it’s approachable but my feeling is that this has moved upmarket into something a little more serious than it used to be

Chapel Down Three Graces 2015

Three Graces 2015 (60% Chardonnay, 32% Pinot Noir, 8% Meunier, with 15% reserve wine) doesn’t quite grab me so much as the N.V. in this vintage, but there is a lovely nose of creamy pear, poached quince and red hedgerow fruit. Fine toasted bread notes show more development than the N.V., with the palate showing some initial breadth followed by a tight, slightly herbal Chardonnay signature.
